Mexican singer Peso Pluma made his MTV Video Music Awards debut tonight (September 12), when he performed his single “Lady Gaga” at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. On a circular stage, he sang a relatively faithful version of the song while surrounded by a musicians on Spanish guitar, upright bass, trombone, strings, and horns. He even snuck in a mid-song shoutout to Mexico. Watch Pluma’s performance below.

Pluma got nominated for Best New Artist at this year’s VMAs. Additionally, his Eslabon Armado collaboration “Ella Baila Sola” competed for Best Latin.

Pluma issued his new album, Génesis, back in June, and it has become the biggest música Mexicana album of all time. “Ella Baila Sola,” meanwhile, is the first regional Mexican song to reach No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart.
